RESUMO

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States despite most cases being preventable by vaccination. HPV vaccine efficacy varies in relationship to when the vaccine is administered, with greater efficacy obtained if administered prior to sexual debut. Historically, this vaccine was created to protect women from cervical cancer. As scientific knowledge of HPV-related cancers has advanced, it has become evident that HPV vaccination is a priority for both genders. HPV is known to contribute to male cancers of the mouth, throat, anus, and penis, as well as causing genital warts. This article aims to explain the benefits of HPV immunization for the gender the farthest from meeting vaccination goals, boys, and young men. This article expounds on the school nurses' role in promoting vaccination to prevent HPV infection and the sequela of related cancers.

RESUMO

The National Association of School Nurses supports pandemic control efforts. School nurses are advocates for their students, caregivers, school staff, teachers, and school administrators. With a clear understanding of how the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) virus evolves over time and changes transmissibility through mutations, school nurses gain understanding in epidemiologic calculation of herd immunity. To understand why the estimates of herd immunity fluctuate, as often reported in the news, school nurses need to understand how epidemiologist calculate this number. Obtaining herd immunity will protect the most vulnerable in the population. If all countries have access to vaccines and populations choose to receive vaccinations, herd immunity is more likely to be obtained. Equipped with knowledge of how herd immunity is calculated, school nurses are in a position to educate and advocate for the use of vaccines.

RESUMO

The National Association of School Nurses supports immunization to reduce the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases. School nurses have the obligation to discern and understand vaccine strategies to aid in the advocacy and education of their school administrators, faculty, staff, students, and caregivers. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread to all continents, and the total number of those infected or immune through effective vaccination is well below the estimated need for herd immunity. To achieve herd immunity against the global outbreak of COVID-19, the rapid development of safe and effective vaccines is essential. Using multiple strategies and vaccine platforms to speed up the vaccine development process will inherently save more lives. Equipped with this knowledge of vaccine strategy, the school nurse can more aptly advocate for the use of the COVID-19 vaccines to move toward herd immunity in their communities.

RESUMO

School nurses are advocates, caregivers, and teachers. It is the responsibility of school nurses to understand current prevention and treatment options. In understanding how and why coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mRNA vaccines work, school nurses are in a trusted position to explain and advocate vaccination to students and their caregivers. The messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccine is a product of the latest scientific and medical technology. A better understanding of how and why this vaccination is effective may prevent vaccination hesitancy and provide reassurance to those choosing to accept vaccination. In December 2020, the National Association of School Nurses publicized its support for vaccination against COVID-19. As the COVID-19 pandemic lingers school nurses will step toward the front line to aid in the abatement of poor public health outcomes that may be severely affecting their schools, students, and caregivers.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess the ability of a 0.1% w/w o-cymen-5-ol/ 0.6% w/w zinc chloride/ sodium fluoride dentifrice to control oral malodour compared to a sodium fluoride control dentifrice. DESIGN: Following baseline measurement of oral volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), the subjects brushed twice daily for 1 week with either the test or control dentifrice. The VSC concentration in breath samples was monitored up to 12 hours post-treatment, by gas chromatography (GC). RESULTS: 75 subjects were included in the efficacy analysis. Relative to the sodium fluoride control dentifrice group the o-cymen-5-ol/ zinc chloride/ sodium fluoride dentifrice exhibited statistically significant reductions (P<0.0001) in hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan and total measured VSCs immediately and after 1, 2, 3 and 12 (overnight) hours post-treatment. CONCLUSION: The results of the present clinical study demonstrated that the use of the 0.1% w/w o-cymen-5-ol/ 0.6% w/w zinc chloride/ sodium fluoride dentifrice over a one week period provided a statistically significant benefit in controlling oral malodour for up to 12 hours post-treatment compared to a sodium fluoride control dentifrice.

RESUMO

This is the seventh article in a nine-part series describing the Principles of Nursing Practice developed by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in collaboration with patient and service organisations, the Department of Health, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, nurses and other healthcare professionals. The article discusses Principle F, the application of skills and knowledge to person-centred nursing care.

RESUMO

AIM: Detecting children's pain in a healthcare setting can be improved by facilitating pain expression in ways that are appropriate to the child's cognitive development and that can be recognised by their carers. To ensure up-to-date guidance on assessing pain in children, the Royal College of Nursing undertook an evidence-based update of pain assessment guidelines, initially published in 2000. METHODS: Following systematic review of the psychometric testing literature, a two-stage critical appraisal process was developed to derive a list of robust tools that could be recommended for use in a variety of settings to assess the intensity of a child's acute pain. Studies were appraised on the basis of their relevance to this topic and according to prespecified quality criteria. Tools were assessed for inclusion in guideline recommendations according to minimum validity and reliability thresholds. RESULTS: Overall the quality of literature was poor, limited by small samples, lack of control groups, unblinded raters and convenience sampling. Twenty-four tools are recommended for use with infants and verbal children without cognitive impairment, 11 of which are purely self-report tools. Eight tools are recommended for use with neonates, some of which require concurrent physiological measures. Four tools are considered valid for use in children with cognitive impairment. All of these tools had shown reliability and validity according to the criteria established for this review. CONCLUSION: The tools are presented in user-friendly tables that include a guide to their key features and the setting and age groups in which they have been validated. They are accompanied by good practice recommendations from experts and recommendations relating to timing and triggers for pain assessment. These outputs are some of those associated with the full guidelines and supporting material published on the Royal College of Nursing website (http://www.rcn.org.uk/childrenspainguideline).

RESUMO

Constipation is a common condition in developed and industrialised nations. Although its exact prevalence is unknown it is estimated that between five and thirty per cent of the U.K. population suffer with it, depending on the criteria used for diagnosis (Candelli, 2001). Constipation that cannot be explained by any underlying abnormalities is known as idiopathic constipation.
